ere’s wishing American filmmaking had held the fort. Or at least this kind of high ground. New York insurance guy Lemmon rents his apartment and MacLaine services company execs, particularly the top guy. Problem is, Bud (Jack Lemmon) gets to liking fragile Fran (Shirley MacLaine) — really liking her — and the romantic quandary gets with morals. Bud and Fran talk like… adults. Their Scotches are half-full or half-empty, depending on the day, with the incomparable Billy Wilder (who else?) pouring. So much bittersweetness, so little time. Magic stuff.
