2.5

Date: 1998

Director: F. Gary Gray

Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Kevin Spacey, David Morse, Ron Rifkin

Worth seeing mostly for the master-class tension between Kevin Spacey and Samuel L. Jackson. Lt. Danny Roman (Jackson) is a veteran Chicago police negotiator who takes hostages of his own when caught in a government building seeking information to escape being framed for the murder of his partner. Suddenly, fellow negotiator Chris Sabian (Spacey) is his cat-and-mouse adversary, with a few too many cops insisting Sabian cut loose the snipers. Director F. Gary Gray (“The Italian Job”) paces it well, lets his leads do their job, and emerges with a crafty, gripping story.
