onathan Demme final helter-skelter parody before turning Hollywood serious (“Silence of the Lambs,” “Philadelphia,” “The Manchurian Candidate”). Matthew Modine (delightful) is undercover FBI agent Mike Downey charged with infiltrating the Mob.

An old premise gets a madcap facelift thanks to Mercedes Ruhl (Connie) who wants out of her marriage with underworld boss Tony “The Tiger” Russo. Then there’s Michelle Pfeiffer (Linda DeMarco) and super-sleazy husband Frankie (“the Cucumber”) DeMarco (Alec Baldwin). Hoping to go straight, lovely Linda takes a job sweeping floors at (where else?) the “Hello Gorgeous” beauty salon. Pfeiffer is at the height of her beauty and Ruhl, a vulgar trumpet, talks like greater Long Island on laughing gas. Great fun.
