o much about this Peter Weir movie is imperfect but vital, a nourishing paradox. Max Klein (Jeff Bridges) survives a commercial plane crash. He’s physically fine but psychologically disfigured. The trauma makes him feel indestructible. He goes through with death-defying acts, which gradually estrange him from his wife (Laura; Isabella Rossellini) and friends. Max is made human again only after meeting and befriending fellow survivor Carla Rodrigo (Rosie Perez). Bridges is an actor of class, empathy, and vulnerability, and Perez a fine foil: They take over the movie. But such dominance begs more jagged edges than the ones Weir provides.
