asy to understand why Oliver Stone would have wanted to make a movie about Alexander the Great, a distinctly larger-than-life figure. But he overreaches. Alexander’s story is narrated by robed Ptolemy (Anthony Hopkins), who gives us the step-by-step history.
While it’s all digitally pretty to look at, neither Colin Farrell (Alexander) nor Angelina Jolie (his mother, Olympias) escape caricature (Jolie in particular flirts with parody) — not a good thing in a humorless undertaking.
That Alexander, King of Macedonia, ignored ancient correctness and went where no man had gone before is history worth recounting. But this is many comic book panels (behold the Gardens of Babylon!) glued together with lots of horses tossed in.
