Man on a Ledge

With one-time warriors Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagal relegated to middle age and Batman occupying most skyscrapers, here’s Sam Worthington to anchor a slight but satisfying B-movie thriller about a wronged cop seeking redemption.

Mitch (Worthington) is a cop serving time for allegedly stealing a Gibraltar-sized diamond from an unscrupulous developer named (an alarmingly gaunt Ed Harris). Improbably sprung from the joint, he takes to a New York hotel ledge to give his family cohorts time to carry out a scheme to prove his innocence and expose dirty cops. Into the mix comes disgraced hostage negotiator Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), who Mitch tries to woo over (while looking down nine stories).

Director Asger Leth borrows from 1,000 similar scripts but puts respectful pacing and passable sense of parody into his 90-minutes of moviemaking. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
